God called and encouraged The Herrera's to open a community center in Milton Bight in 2022 to help families, children and youth at social risk and in poverty. We began activities in the community in March of 2023 and quickly God showed us the depth of the great need.
We now serve up to 100 children and youth on a recurring basis in things like education, sports, spiritual formation and fun.
Components and ways we serve
Education in our community and in the country is greatly lacking but during our time of working in the community, we have found that the problem is much greater than we initially realized. Many of our children are struggling to keep at their grade level and some are severely behind. Because of this, we have decided to focus in on this component by having a professional educator provide specialized classes and tutoring to help our kids succeed. Without these basic skills, our kids will struggle in life to get a job, make a living and provide for their family.
Every Friday we have a day dedicated to having fun with the children. We bring games from the most traditional to the most modern. This component is important because it helps kids learn creativity and provides ways to stay out of drugs and crime which is a risk in the community. This component is important for children like Rosela (10yo) who shared with us that she never has time to play with her friends because she has to take care of her sisters and work washing clothes to get a little money to help her mother who works all day. .
Our coordinator Ted has completed our first round of computer classes! They have been a huge blessing for these children who took them.
Our expectations for these classes are to give the students computer knowledge to help with school, take the community to another level in technology and provide the students with new opportunities for the future.
Our commitment to God is to bring the message of salvation to those who are bound, showing the freedom that God allows us to have through his grace and his sacrifice on the cross.
We currently have a service and bible study in the community each week. We also are working to provide weekly beans and rice to the families that are the most in need as a part of this ministry. Please help us by praying so that adequate funds can be raised each month to provide for this.
Every week we take the children to play different sports. Currently our main focus in Soccer as it is the favorite. We also like to play American Football, Volleyball, kickball and more. We always have a blast.
Our focus with these sports is to be able to teach teamwork, good sportsmanship, goals and discipline. We have very impressive children and we want to support them in achieving each of their goals.
Come by yourself or get together with your church, school, friend group or family and plan a mission trip to Roatan! We would be honored to have you come to the island, introduce you to our community and give you the opportunity to serve where God has gifted you.
You can expect an experience that will be greatly impactful and one that you won't soon forget. You'll be back!
